Last month, I had the lovely opportunity to marry a delightful, adventurous and off-beat couple Amy & Andy, from Australia.  The high-octane world travelers opted for a small public garden, the “Creative Little Garden,” for their nuptials.  Tucked in the hip Alphabet City neighborhood in the Big Apple, this oasis is tended and much-loved by the neighborhood residents.  Situated between two buildings,, it gives the feel of being off in a real wooded park with bird feeders, fountains, porch swings and innumerable charms.   It had a perfect feeling of privacy and required no permit for use.  The couple was asked to make a donation (the amount of their choosing) to use the spot for their wedding.  It had been years since I was down there and was even more charming this time around.

Amy & Andy had a private ceremony, with special touches from home.  In addition to the private vows they’d written, I had gathered blessings and good wishes from many family members and friends that I sprinkled in the ceremony.  After the sweet wedding, they made a few phone calls back home (it was about 7:30 a.m., down under) to share the good news.  The duo brought all of their charms to the event, including real Cuban cigars for a post-wedding smoke, decorations for personal wedding cupcakes, and their wedding memory box.  It was so fitting, as their next honeymoon stop was none other than Havana!

The fun day was captured by Alison Conklin, a Philadelphia-area photographer, who works in New York City often.  I think she did a splendid job capturing the light-hearted, but deeply loving, ceremony.  After the ceremony, we strolled about the neighborhood for quintessential New York moments and photographs.  Enjoy the slide show of Conklin’s divine work.
