All You Need is Love!

The Beatles and Love……they just go together, right?  I think all of us were thrilled to learn that Sir Paul McCartney is engaged to an American!  His love affair with his late wife Linda is legendary.  We certainly wish him well.  (I also harbor a secret fantasy of officiating his wedding!)

Recently, I have noticed something of a trend with Beatles music being included in wedding ceremonies. Songs like “I Will” and “All You Need is Love” are being used as both processional and recessional music by a number of brides and grooms (and not all from the U.K.!).   Indeed, just last night, my bride requested a leisurely rendition of “Here Comes the Sun,” played by a violin/viola duo, at her Tribeca Rooftop wedding.

The lyrics and wisdom of the Beatles add a little spice to any ceremony script.   For instance, John Lennon’s words, “A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality,” speaks to the hopes and aspirations of a newly married couple.   Or a sentiment for us all:  “In the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make”

For some couples, paying homage to the Beatles is even more dramatic.  For instance, my wonderful couple Jeff & Lisa, who eloped from Florida, decided to have their wedding at the Imagine mosaic in Central Park.  Jeff is a huge fan of John Lennon.  The mosaic, made by artisans in Naples (Italy, not Florida….),  is part of the garden of remembrance created by Yoko Ono when John Lennon was killed.   The pathway of peace, in the Strawberry Fields area, includes the names of 121 countries that wished to be remembered in John and Yoko’s quest for peace.

To my way of thinking, a wedding that integrates the personal happiness of a couple with the desire for a greater social good is the most meaningful ceremony of all.    The songs and memories of the Beatles help us do that beautifully.

I can resist sharing a clip of my favorite, “I Will.”
